Paper accepted at USENIX WOOT 2026: “Breaking Infrared Recapture Detection”
One line of defense against deepfakes is to detect “recapture” — a photograph of a display or a printout — using an infrared depth sensor. This work demonstrates that such infrared-based recapture detection can be defeated with a hot mirror, an optical filter that transmits visible light while reflecting infrared light arriving at a particular angle.
As a countermeasure, the paper proposes using a dual-pixel image sensor so that both imaging and depth measurement are performed in visible light.
